Urgent Call Issued Over Conditions of Palestinian Prisoners in Israeli Detention

An urgent appeal has been issued in Gaza highlighting the worsening conditions faced by Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli detention, as the annual Prisoners’ Day approaches. The call frames the situation as part of a broader humanitarian crisis unfolding under a prolonged genocidal war, with mounting concern over the treatment and wellbeing of those held behind bars.

According to statements released on Sunday, international bodies, including humanitarian and human rights institutions, are being urged to fulfil their legal and moral responsibilities in response to what are described as grave violations of international humanitarian law. Reports point to a rapidly deteriorating environment inside detention facilities, where prisoners are said to be subjected to systematic deprivation, severe overcrowding, and prolonged isolation from the outside world.

Accounts emerging from within the prison system describe worsening health conditions among detainees, driven by restricted access to medical care and the denial of essential treatment for the sick and injured. Legal access has also reportedly been curtailed, alongside the suspension of family visits, further deepening the isolation of thousands of individuals.

The appeal calls for immediate international intervention, including the deployment of independent inspection missions to assess prison conditions and ensure compliance with legal standards. It also urges pressure to secure urgent medical care, restore family contact, and hold those responsible for alleged violations accountable through international legal mechanisms.

More than 9,500 Palestinian prisoners are currently being held, including children and women, categories afforded specific protections under international law. The continued lack of decisive international action, it is argued, risks enabling further deterioration, as concerns grow over measures that could further endanger the lives of those detained.
