A major investigation published by The New York Times has drawn renewed international attention to allegations of sexual violence and abuse against Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli detention facilities, including claims involving men, women and children.
Columnist Nicholas Kristof reported from the occupied West Bank, citing testimonies from former detainees, human rights organisations and United Nations findings describing what campaigners say is a widespread pattern of humiliation, coercion and sexual abuse carried out inside Israeli prisons and interrogation centres.
The report argued that while Israeli and Western leaders strongly condemned sexual violence committed against Israelis during the events of October 2023, allegations involving Palestinian prisoners have received far less political and media attention. Human rights groups quoted in the investigation said such abuses were no longer isolated incidents, but part of a broader system of mistreatment directed at Palestinian detainees.
Among the testimonies cited was that of Palestinian journalist Sami al-Sa’i, who said he was subjected to severe abuse while held under administrative detention in 2024. Other former prisoners described physical and sexual violence during interrogations and inside detention centres, with some alleging they were pressured to cooperate with Israeli intelligence services.
The investigation also referred to reports from children’s organisations stating that a significant number of Palestinian minors detained by Israeli forces reported witnessing or experiencing sexual abuse. Female detainees interviewed for the report described repeated harassment, degrading treatment and violent searches while in custody.
The article further highlighted criticism from legal and human rights advocates over what they described as a climate of impunity surrounding allegations of abuse inside Israeli detention facilities. Campaigners said the failure to hold perpetrators accountable risked encouraging further violations against Palestinian prisoners.
In its conclusion, the investigation argued that the continued dehumanisation of Palestinians within Israeli political discourse had contributed to an environment in which abuses were able to occur with little scrutiny. It called on Western governments, particularly the United States, to take a clearer position regarding allegations of mistreatment and sexual violence against Palestinian detainees.
