Israeli ministers push for expanded settler entry into Al-Aqsa compound during Jerusalem anniversary

More than twenty Israeli ministers and members of the Knesset have signed a petition calling on police authorities to facilitate large-scale settler entry into the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound later this week during events marking the anniversary of Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem.

The petition, backed by senior figures from the ruling Likud party and the far-right Religious Zionism alliance, reportedly urges Israeli police commanders to allow wider access to the site on Friday. Israeli politicians behind the initiative described the move as a demonstration of what they called Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem.

Among those reported to have signed the document are senior ministers within the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, including officials responsible for justice, security and other major portfolios. The proposal also includes an alternative request to extend settler access on Thursday evening should Friday restrictions remain in place.

Palestinian analysts and Jerusalem affairs specialists warned that the planned move could further inflame tensions surrounding one of the region’s most sensitive religious sites. Commentators said the growing political support for expanded incursions reflected an attempt by Israeli leaders to impose new realities at the compound amid the continuing genocidal war in Gaza and escalating pressure across occupied Palestinian territories.

Calls have intensified for Palestinians to increase their presence at Al-Aqsa Mosque in the coming days amid fears that unprecedented measures could be introduced during the anniversary events.
