French deportation bid against activist linked to Palestine solidarity halted by court ruling

A French administrative commission has provisionally rejected efforts to deport Egyptian-Palestinian activist and academic Ramy Shaath, in a decision seen as a significant legal setback for authorities seeking to remove him over his public advocacy on Palestine-related issues.

The case centred on allegations that his participation in demonstrations and solidarity networks posed a threat to public order. However, the commission found that expulsion would disproportionately interfere with his right to private and family life, as well as his freedom of expression, effectively blocking the deportation on human rights grounds.

Shaath, a former coordinator within the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement in Egypt, was previously detained for over two years before his release following sustained international pressure. Having lost Egyptian citizenship and unable to be sent to Gaza amid the ongoing genocidal war on the territory, his legal situation has become increasingly complex. His representatives say they will continue to contest any renewed attempts to remove him through the courts.
