ٍSAFA— Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya has appealed for his release from solitary confinement, saying he has been subjected to renewed physical abuse in Israeli custody, according to a statement issued Thursday by Physicians for Human Rights–Israel (PHRI).
The organization said Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, told his lawyer during a visit on Tuesday that prison guards assaulted him again following a previous legal visit.
He said he suffered a finger injury that caused bleeding and has since been held in solitary confinement in an underground detention facility known as "Rakevet."
According to PHRI, Abu Safiya urged his lawyer to "do everything possible to get me out of this place," calling for an end to his isolation, a transfer from the facility, and access to adequate medical care.
He also requested an eye examination, the return of his prescription glasses, and continued access to pain medication.
The organization said the legal visit took place under conditions that did not guarantee attorney-client confidentiality.
According to PHRI, Abu Safiya and his lawyer communicated through a glass barrier using a telephone while two masked guards stood nearby and were able to overhear their conversation.
Abu Safiya also said that although he underwent medical examinations, including X-rays, after a previous legal visit, he was never informed of the results.
He said he was prescribed pain medication for a limited period before it was discontinued, despite being examined by a doctor several times over the past week without receiving further treatment.
PHRI said Abu Safiya's account appears to contradict information submitted by Israeli authorities to the Israeli Supreme Court, which reportedly stated there was no evidence that his life was at risk and that he had undergone multiple medical evaluations.
The organization said Israeli authorities did not disclose the results of those examinations or directly address the reports of abuse.
PHRI called for urgent intervention to ensure Abu Safiya receives an independent medical and legal assessment free from outside interference and that his safety is guaranteed.
It also demanded his transfer from the "Rakevet" facility and the immediate end of his solitary confinement, warning that his continued detention under such conditions raises serious concerns about his health and well-being.
The case is part of a broader petition filed by PHRI before the Israeli Supreme Court seeking the release of 14 Palestinian doctors from Gaza, including Abu Safiya, who has been held since December 2024 without formal charges or trial.
