SAFA- Palestinian prisoner Hassan Salameh has revealed, in a letter smuggled from solitary confinement in Israel's Janot Prison, that isolated prisoners are facing escalating abuse, repeated assaults, deliberate starvation, and systematic medical neglect.

In a letter published by his fiancée Ghufran Zamel, Salameh said that Palestinian prisoners were subjected to four raids and searches in less than ten days, during which they were beaten by Israeli occupation forces. He added that they were also assaulted while being transferred from solitary confinement in Megiddo Prison to Janot Prison and during transport for lawyer visits.

Salameh said the food provided to the Palestinian prisoners in Janot's isolation unit is significantly less than what they previously received in Megiddo, describing the portions as insufficient to meet even their minimum nutritional needs, leaving prisoners in a constant state of hunger.

He added that prisoners are allowed only one hour of daily recreation per cell in a small yard that receives no sunlight. He noted that the Israeli occupation prison service has drawn a line inside the yard that prisoners are forbidden to cross.

The prisoner also described complete isolation among detainees, saying he is aware that several Palestinian prisoners are being held in the prison, including Bilal Al-Barghouthi, Muhannad Shreim, Jamal Al-Hour, Marwan Al-Barghouthi, Mahmoud Attallah, and Abbas Al-Sayed, but that he is unable to communicate with any of them.

Regarding his health, Salameh said his condition continues to deteriorate. He reported suffering from persistent diarrhea for more than a year without receiving treatment and said his eyesight has worsened to the point that he now needs glasses to read the Quran. He added that he is still waiting for an endoscopy that has not yet been performed.

He also said he requires dental treatment but was offered only tooth extraction without any attempt to treat or preserve the affected tooth. According to Salameh, the prison doctor visits the solitary confinement wing only once a month and merely passes through the section without conducting medical examinations.

Salameh, a resident of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, is held in Israeli occupation prisons since May 17, 1996. He is serving 47 life sentences.
