Lawyers for Justice reviews PA violations against Palestinians during a year of emergency state

Lawyers for Justice group published a report it conducted about the violations documented induring a year of emergency state declared by the president of the Palestinian Authority in March 2020, the beginning of coronavirus spread.

The group showed its report during a press conference in Ramallah titled "Arbitrary Detention in a Year of Emergency" which focused on the violations committed, mainly the political arrests. 

Muhanned Karajeh, a lawyer, presented the contents of the report as it focused on the security forces' violations and the cases of arrests of political activists, human rights defenders, and lawyers. 

He talked about the non-commitment of security forces to health procedures during the campaigns of arrests, the detainees' testimonies of their experience inside the prisons during the spread of coronavirus, and the extent of commitment to laws and conventions agreed by the Palestinian Authority. 

He talked about the Palestinian Authority's exaggeration in extending the emergency state which seemed like they wanted this situation to continue, the intervention of the security forces in the Legislative Authority's power, and the torture imposed on politicians detainees, and human rights defenders.

 He also talked about the improper legal procedures of arrest as the Palestinians were being arrested without being brought before a court. 

He also spoke about the harassment the lawyers for Justice group exposed and noted that some people were incited not to deal with the group.

The lawyer Zafer Saaydeh gave the security forces legitimacy to stop the detention of politicians without arrest warrants. 

He noted that more than half of the detainees confirmed that the Israeli security forces' partial and complete commitment to the prevention procedures and health protocols.

He mentioned a part of the detainees who spoke to the Public Prosecutor's Office about torture.

During the conference, other citizens talked about the Israeli forces' oppression and their practices in different spots in the West Bank, and the exposure of detainees to torture, especially in Jericho prison,.
