A powerful collective of over 500 Romanian cultural figures has broken the silence, urging their country’s leaders to take a firm stand against the unfolding genocide in Gaza. In a petition addressed to the Romanian president and government, these voices, comprising writers, filmmakers, educators, and artists, demanded immediate action to stop what they described as an unrelenting campaign of extermination against the Palestinian people.
Speaking not just for themselves, but for the silenced and besieged in Gaza, the signatories called for Romania to condition its ties with Israel on respect for international law. They urged their government to join European efforts to impose sanctions and halt agreements with Tel Aviv should the attacks and illegal colonisation of Palestinian land persist.
The petition, as reported by the Palestinian News Agency, condemned the systematic destruction of life and culture in Gaza. It warned that life has become unbearable for Palestinians under siege, particularly for artists, journalists, and teachers who are being starved of the very tools they use to preserve memory and truth.
Since October 7, Gaza has endured a war of annihilation. Backed by American support and shielded from accountability, Israel's assault has left over 183,000 Palestinians dead or wounded, most of them women and children. With famine tightening its grip, and entire families buried beneath rubble or vanished without trace, the silence of international institutions has become deafening.
But from Bucharest, a collective moral voice now rises, demanding justice, solidarity, and the end of complicity.
