Hunger for freedom, Maher Al-Akhras continues his strike

The Palestinian detainee Maher Al-Akhras has been on hunger strike for 101 days, protesting his administrative detention in Israel's jails.

The Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Committee had warned of the seriousness of al-Akhras health condition, pointing out that he may lose his life at any moment.

Hassan Abed Rabbu, the spokesman of the committee, had said in a press release that the health condition of al-Akhras was further deteriorating as he suffers from severe pain and his vision and hearing are affected. He added that his hunger strike will affect the vital functions of his body organs; and thus, his life is at risk.

Al-Akhras, 49, a father of six children, was detained four times before. He was first detained in 1989, when he spent seven months in detention, for the second time in 2004, when he spent two years in detention and once again in 2009 when he was held for 16 months in administrative detention, and another time in 2018 when he spent 11 months in detention.

He was recently detained on July 27, 2020, and has been sentenced to four months in administrative detention without charge or trial.

Therefore, he immediately started his hunger strike demanding his release.
