The head of the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Committee in the Gaza Strip, Hassan Qaneita, called on human rights institutions to monitor the health condition of the wounded Jerusalemite detainee, Ayman al-Kurd, 22, from the Kafr Aqab neighborhood.
The wounded al-Kurd detainee has been arrested since September 19, 2016 in the Bab Al-Sahera area in occupied Jerusalem, after he was seriously injured after being shot by the occupation soldiers at close distance.
The Occupation Court charged the al-Kurd captive with carrying out a stabbing operation against the Israeli occupation soldiers. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, and imposed on him to pay a financial compensation of 330,000 shekels (about 93,000 dollars) to the injured soldiers.
Al-Kurd detainee suffers from paralysis in his lower limbs and is in the Maraj prison hospital in Ramle. He moves by wheelchair, lives in difficult health conditions, and receives daily more than 10 pills, including painkillers and medicine for the stomach. He is in an urgent need to a mattress and medical shoes because of the aches in the regular mattress that doubles his back pain, and because of the aches in his feet from wearing normal shoes, according to the Detainees Committee.
Qaneita said that the Israeli occupation prisons administration is disregarding the lives of sick prisoners in securing their needs, performing surgeries, and providing appropriate treatments. It also does not allow the entry of medical staff, and refuses to hand over their files to be presented to doctors outside prisons.
He added, "This matter increases the number of the killed Palestinian detainees, whether they are in prisons or after liberation, affected by their diseases that they inherited inside prisons and cells."
The Israeli occupation is not committed to international laws and covenants, and violates basic and human rights.
He called on the competent authorities and institutions working in the field of health, led by the World Health Organization, to demand the protection of sick prisoners and work to protect international conventions and treaties that the occupation authorities violate daily for the right of sick prisoners.
