The spokesperson for Gaza Municipality, Asem Al-Nabih, has issued a stark warning about the deteriorating living conditions in Gaza City, where citizens face life-threatening challenges this winter due to severe damage to critical infrastructure. The ongoing 'Israeli' assault over the past 14 months has devastated sewage and rainwater drainage networks, leaving the city on the brink of a humanitarian disaster.
Speaking to Shihab Agency, Al-Nabih revealed that more than 175,000 metres of sewage networks and 15,000 metres of rainwater drainage systems have been destroyed, alongside extensive damage to treatment plants and pumps. The destruction has led to sewage mixing with rainwater in Sheikh Radwan Pool, creating serious health and environmental risks, as well as increasing the likelihood of flooding in nearby areas, including shelter schools.
While municipal crews are carrying out temporary repairs, Al-Nabih emphasised that these are insufficient and that urgent, sustainable measures are required to mitigate the crisis. He also highlighted the mounting pressures on municipal services due to the large numbers of displaced residents, which further strain water supply, waste disposal, and sewage management in the city.
