Ali Omar was a devoted volunteer with Civil Defence who devoted more than 23 years to saving lives in Gaza, frequently putting his own life in danger to save others. His guiding principle was simple: "We will not stop serving those in need as long as there is a single citizen in Gaza who requires our help." Ali stayed dedicated to his goal during the Israeli conflict, even though there was always a risk of violence. He frequently worked on his days off to rescue people of the wreckage of damaged homes. Despite the destruction, he worked relentlessly to preserve lives, and his deeds spoke louder than words.
Ali's bravery would ultimately cost him his life on that tragic day. After receiving a call about a building collapse in the Sabra neighbourhood, he hurried back to save a woman who was still buried in the debris after saving five children. Later, his coworkers related how Ali returned to the scene in spite of the impending risk because he was motivated by the desire to reunite the mother with her children. Unfortunately, Ali was killed when he tried to save the woman and the building was hit by a missile once more.
With only his right hand—the hand that had saved so many lives—remaining intact, Ali Omar became the 87th martyr from the Civil Defence. His narrative serves as a monument to his compassion and dedication, and his sacrifice serves as a sobering reminder of the atrocities endured by those who serve during times of conflict.
