"The hospital is under constant threat," Dr. Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, stated in a press release on Saturday. He described the facility, now riddled with bullet holes and shell fragments, as resembling a military target more than a humanitarian facility. The hospital's surroundings are frequently shelled, with explosions damaging the third floor and entrance on Friday, causing panic among patients, staff, and families. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the attack, but it instilled widespread fear, particularly among the wounded and children.
Despite assurances from international organisations, essential supplies, such as electricity, water, and oxygen, have yet to arrive. The World Health Organisation managed to send only 70 units of blood, far less than the 200 urgently needed. Dr. Abu Safia highlighted that occupying forces have denied critical medical supplies entry and have blocked medical teams and nurses from accessing the hospital.
Currently, Kamal Adwan Hospital is caring for over 72 injured patients, including nine requiring urgent surgery. Due to the lack of resources, some of these patients have been transferred to Gaza City. Dr. Abu Safia made a heartfelt plea for immediate assistance, emphasising the need for medical equipment, painkillers, and food. "We can’t even provide basic meals for the wounded," he said, stressing that proper nutrition is vital for recovery.
He also brought attention to the dire situation faced by medical staff, who continue to work tirelessly without food, underscoring the urgent need for international intervention to allow the entry of essential supplies and medical personnel. "The hospital’s ability to continue delivering care depends on swift support from the international community," Dr. Abu Safia asserted.
Concluding his appeal, Dr. Abu Safia warned of the ongoing danger from sniper activity and gunfire surrounding the hospital. "We need help now, before it’s too late," he urged, as the situation grows increasingly perilous.
