The humanitarian organisation Oxfam has raised alarm over the minimal aid reaching Gaza, revealing that only a dozen trucks carrying food and water have been allowed entry in the past two and a half months. This represents a dramatic decrease compared to the hundreds of daily deliveries prior to the blockade’s escalation.
The severe restrictions have left Gaza’s population of 2.3 million in desperate need, forcing many families to scavenge for food amidst mounting shortages. Essential infrastructure, including hospitals, is on the brink of collapse, with limited supplies and electricity compounding the crisis.
Oxfam has called for the urgent creation of sustainable humanitarian corridors to facilitate the flow of aid and prevent further deterioration of living conditions. The organisation warns that inaction from the international community risks pushing Gaza into an unprecedented humanitarian disaster.
The current restrictions on aid delivery are part of a broader blockade that has devastated Gaza’s economy and infrastructure for over a decade. This latest escalation has further tightened the siege, leaving civilians with little to no access to clean water, adequate nutrition, or basic medical care. The situation has disproportionately impacted vulnerable groups, including children, pregnant women, and the elderly, many of whom are now at risk of severe malnutrition and preventable diseases.
Oxfam, along with other humanitarian groups, has condemned the international community's inadequate response, calling for swift action to alleviate the blockade. They emphasise that providing unhindered access for aid is both a moral imperative and a legal obligation under international humanitarian law, particularly given the escalating crisis. Without immediate intervention, the humanitarian situation in Gaza will continue to deteriorate, leading to devastating consequences for millions of people.
