UN Official: Delivering Aid to Gaza Is Nearly Impossible Amid Israeli Aggression

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Tom Fletcher, has described Gaza as “the most dangerous place for humanitarian aid delivery,” condemning the Israeli occupation's systematic obstruction of humanitarian efforts.

Fletcher, speaking after his first visit to the Middle East, stated, “Following a year of Israeli genocide and the deliberate killing of humanitarian workers, delivering even a fraction of the needed aid has become nearly impossible despite the immense suffering of Palestinians in Gaza.” He highlighted that Israeli authorities have rejected over 100 requests for access to northern Gaza since 6 October, effectively cutting off critical assistance to those in need.

He further pointed out that last year, the International Court of Justice issued interim orders recognising Israel's genocide and collective punishment against Palestinians in Gaza.

Yet, Fletcher stated, “The ongoing crimes of the Israeli occupation make it clear there is no safe place for civilians in Gaza. Schools, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure have been reduced to rubble.”

Fletcher emphasised the catastrophic impact of the Israeli blockade on northern Gaza, which has lasted for more than two months. He noted that the blockade has caused widespread famine, while southern Gaza is overcrowded, with Palestinians enduring inhumane living conditions. As winter approaches, the need for aid has become even more critical.

He condemned the Israeli airstrikes targeting densely populated areas, including locations where civilians were ordered to take shelter. These attacks have killed large numbers of civilians, inflicted massive destruction, and caused relentless displacement.

In the West Bank, Fletcher described the situation as the deadliest year for Palestinians in recent history. He highlighted the destruction of vital infrastructure, including roads and water networks, particularly in refugee camps. Settler violence and home demolitions have displaced thousands, while Israeli movement restrictions further undermine livelihoods and access to essential services like healthcare.

Despite these mounting challenges, Fletcher praised Palestinian and international humanitarian workers who risk their lives daily to support the besieged population. He called on the international community to uphold international humanitarian law, protect Palestinian civilians, demand the release of hostages, and ensure support for UNRWA's crucial work. He stressed the need to break the ongoing cycle of Israeli violence and impunity.
