Israel Systematically Silences Truth-Tellers During Its Genocide on Gaza

The American network CBS News has reported that the Israeli occupation has deliberately pursued a policy of silencing journalism amid its genocide on the Gaza Strip, which has lasted over 15 months. From the onset of this onslaught on October 7, 2023, Gaza has faced widespread destruction and relentless death, with at least 46,000 Palestinians killed, including over 300 aid workers and 1,000 medical professionals, as per UN statistics.

The Committee to Protect Journalists has noted that this period has been the deadliest for Palestinian journalists since it began its documentation in 1992. At least 160 journalists, translators, and media professionals who worked to expose Israeli atrocities have been killed.

Former U.S. diplomat Hala Rarit highlighted that Israeli attacks have systematically targeted journalists and their families, aiming to silence the truth. Rarit, who resigned from the State Department in protest of U.S. complicity in Gaza's genocide, has criticized Washington’s failure to condemn these attacks. She revealed that her proposal for a White House statement against the targeting of journalists in Gaza was dismissed as "too controversial."

Despite official rhetoric supporting press freedom, CBS News noted that Israel has barred international media from entering Gaza, leaving Palestinian journalists to cover the conflict under dire conditions of hunger, displacement, and constant airstrikes.

ARTICLE 19, an international human rights organization, has condemned the ongoing targeting of journalists and media workers in Gaza. The group has called on Israel to end these violations and uphold its obligations under international law to protect freedom of the press. These attacks, persisting into early 2025, underscore the systematic silencing of truth-tellers amid a devastating genocide.
