A Father’s Final Journey: War, Illness, and Loss in Gaza

The tragic story of Khalil Al-Jarousha underscores the immense suffering endured by kidney patients in Gaza amid ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis. Khalil, aged 57, battled illness, displacement, and the brutality of war until his untimely death.

Khalil, a kidney patient receiving vital treatment at Al-Shifa Hospital, faced daily challenges exacerbated by the war's devastation. Despite needing regular dialysis three times a week for seven years, his routine was disrupted when Israeli forces stormed the hospital, detaining patients, including Khalil and his son Ali, for 15 harrowing days. During this period, they were deprived of basic necessities like food, water, and crucial medications. The conditions led Khalil to suffer a heart attack after being threatened and attacked by soldiers and dogs.

Following their release, Khalil's health continued to deteriorate due to the prolonged neglect and the stress of displacement. Forced to relocate multiple times amid bombings and ongoing conflict, Khalil's journey eventually ended in critical condition at Abu Youssef Al-Najjar Hospital in Rafah. Despite emergency dialysis and efforts to stabilize him, his health declined further.

For five months, Khalil endured the horrors of war and inadequate healthcare in Rafah, before being displaced again to Deir Al-Balah. Here, he and his son Ali lived in harsh conditions, surviving on meager rations due to the blockade preventing essential supplies from entering Gaza. Khalil's health continued to decline, exacerbated by malnutrition and the lack of proper medical care.

In his final days, Khalil's son Ali remained by his side, witnessing his father's suffering and eventual passing on December 5, 2025. Khalil's death was a result of malnutrition, lack of medical treatment, and the ongoing conflict that has ravaged Gaza for over a year. He passed away far from his loved ones, leaving behind a legacy of resilience in the face of unimaginable adversity.

The plight of Khalil Al-Jarousha highlights the dire reality faced by kidney patients in Gaza, where shortages of essential medications and healthcare infrastructure devastate lives amidst relentless conflict and displacement.
