After Trump Lifted Sanctions on Settlers, the West Bank Faces a Real Catastrophe

The recent ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip has exacerbated internal tensions within Netanyahu's coalition government, according to Israeli affairs expert Imad Abu Awad. However, despite these tensions, Abu Awad believes that the crisis will not lead to the government's collapse, as figures like Ben Gvir and Smotrich are unlikely to support a motion to dissolve the government. Netanyahu also has alternative strategies to manage any potential departures from the coalition.

Abu Awad stressed that the Israeli occupation's project in the West Bank continues to accelerate, with Trump's recent decision to lift sanctions on settlers only intensifying these efforts. This includes expanding settlements, annexation, and undermining the Palestinian cause. Abu Awad highlighted that the West Bank is now on the brink of annexation, which he described as a catastrophe in every sense.

The situation in the West Bank, Abu Awad argued, is dire, with 750 checkpoints currently in place across the region. These checkpoints, both mobile and fixed, as well as concrete barriers within Palestinian cities, illustrate the increasing severity of the occupation's control.

Furthermore, the recent actions of the new U.S. president, Donald Trump, who cancelled sanctions imposed on extremist Jewish settlers by his predecessor, Joe Biden, have emboldened Israeli right-wing efforts. This decision, made during his first day in office, directly impacts the safety of Palestinians living under occupation in the West Bank.
