Egypt: Rafah Crossing to Open Soon with European Monitors

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty announced that the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip “will begin operating soon once the Palestinian side completes its preparations,” with the presence of European monitors.

In a recorded interview with “Cairo News Channel” on Monday evening, Abdel Aty stated, “Humanitarian and medical aid is being delivered at good rates so far, exceeding the agreed-upon number of 600 trucks per day.”

He added, “Egypt is providing all possible facilitation, and aid is entering through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The Rafah crossing will begin operation soon once preparations on the Palestinian side are complete.”

He continued, “The Egyptian side is ready, but the Israeli side destroyed several facilities on the Palestinian side of the crossing, and there will be monitors from the European Union.”

About a week ago, Major General Khaled Mogahed, Governor of North Sinai—where the Rafah crossing is located—stated that “some repairs are underway around the crossing on the Palestinian side following recent destruction, and it will open immediately once the repairs are complete.”

Since May 24, humanitarian aid has been entering Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing (controlled by Israel), after the Israeli army seized the Rafah crossing and destroyed and burned parts of it during an operation that began in the city on May 7.

The ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, which began its first phase on January 19, stipulates the entry of 600 humanitarian aid trucks daily into Gaza and the reopening of the Rafah crossing seven days after implementing the agreement.

The Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement include three phases, each lasting 42 days.
