102 Violations Against Palestinian Journalists: A Continuing Crackdown on Media Freedoms

The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) recorded 102 violations against media freedoms in Palestine during January 2025, reflecting a slight 0.9% decrease from December 2024. However, Israeli authorities remained the primary perpetrators, responsible for 80% of these attacks.

According to MADA’s report, Israeli forces committed 82 violations, including 58 in the West Bank—Jerusalem included—and 24 in Gaza. Among these, eight journalists were killed before a ceasefire agreement was signed. The report also documented nine physical assaults, two journalist arrests, 21 cases of coverage bans, and 22 targeted attacks aimed at obstructing media work. Five journalists' homes were destroyed by Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

In parallel, Palestinian authorities in the West Bank were responsible for 18 recorded violations, marking a 42% decrease compared to December. Meanwhile, social media platforms—specifically Meta—restricted two Palestinian journalists' accounts, adding to the ongoing suppression of Palestinian voices.

Despite a slight numerical decline, the systematic targeting of journalists, especially in Gaza, underscores the persistent assault on press freedom in Palestine.
