The Director of the Government Media Office in Gaza, Ismail al-Thawabta, revealed that more than 365 Palestinian children are currently detained in Israeli jails, some of whom were arrested during the 15-month-long Israeli aggression on Gaza. In a statement on February 22, al-Thawabta emphasized that these children are enduring severe hardships in "brutal" Israeli prisons, where they face horrific forms of torture.
Al-Thawabta highlighted that Palestinian children are tried in unfair, racist, and criminal military courts, in blatant violation of international laws and conventions. Unlike children worldwide, they are denied basic rights and subjected to systemic oppression.
According to the Palestinian Prisoners and Released Prisoners Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Club, over 770 cases of administrative detention among children in the West Bank have been recorded since the start of the aggression on Gaza. However, there is no available data on the number of children arrested in Gaza due to the ongoing "crime of enforced disappearance."
The organizations also noted the harsh sentences imposed on detained children, excluding those who are administratively detained or forcibly disappeared. These include one child sentenced to life imprisonment, three children sentenced to 15 years, four children sentenced to 5-9 years, and others sentenced to 1-3 years for alleged affiliation with Palestinian factions. The remaining children face sentences of 6-18 months for charges such as throwing stones.
As the international community remains largely silent, Palestinian children continue to suffer under Israel’s oppressive system, underscoring the urgent need for global action to uphold their rights and end their unjust imprisonment.
