“Doctors Against Genocide” Calls for Legislation to Support UNRWA and Protect Hospitals

Dr. Nidal Jbour, an American co-founder of Doctors Against Genocide, has urged the U.S. Senate to pass two critical bills—one to restore funding for UNRWA and another to criminalise the forced displacement of Palestinians.

In media statements on Saturday, Jbour underscored UNRWA’s vital role as the largest humanitarian organisation in Gaza, providing 70% of essential healthcare services. He stressed that no other organisation could replace its work in the besieged Strip.

Doctors Against Genocide is also advocating for legislation to ensure absolute protection for healthcare institutions and medical personnel worldwide, including in Gaza. Jbour emphasised that medical facilities must be recognised as sacred spaces, never to be targeted under any pretext. The organisation has already engaged with several U.S. senators and is seeking a sponsor for the proposed law.

The Israeli occupation has destroyed 34 out of 38 hospitals in Gaza, carrying out 520 airstrikes on medical facilities. These attacks have resulted in the martyrdom of 1,056 medical personnel and the arrest of 2,260 others, leaving the healthcare system in a state of total collapse.
