A Systematic Erasure: Israel’s Assault on Tulkarem and Nur Shams Camps

The Israeli military assault on Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps has entered its most brutal phase, with Tulkarem under siege for a month and Nur Shams for 17 days. The relentless attacks have resulted in the killing of 12 Palestinians, the arrest and injury of dozens, and the forced displacement of over 15,000 residents. The occupation has turned homes into military outposts, raided hospitals, and carried out widespread demolitions, leaving families homeless and terrified.

The destruction extends beyond homes, targeting vital infrastructure—electricity, water, sewage, and communication networks—deepening the humanitarian crisis. The displaced struggle in overcrowded shelters, facing severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies. In Nur Shams, 9,000 people have been forcibly expelled, with systematic demolitions aimed at erasing the camp’s identity. The head of the Popular Committee, Nihad Abu Shawish, warns that this is not merely an assault but a calculated attempt to erase decades of Palestinian existence.

The situation in Tulkarem mirrors this strategy, with entire neighbourhoods levelled to the ground. At least 40 residential buildings and 300 commercial shops have been destroyed, while thousands remain displaced. According to Faisal Salama, head of the Popular Committee in Tulkarem camp, Israel's objective is not security but the erasure of Palestinian refugee camps by altering their demographic and architectural structure.

Despite the destruction, the residents of Tulkarem and Nur Shams refuse to surrender their identity. Their struggle is not just for survival but for the right to return, for justice, and for the preservation of their history. The world cannot remain silent as Israel systematically erases these camps, displacing thousands in a blatant attempt to rewrite history.
