"Free Palestine" Chants Fill London as Police Arrest "Big Ben Climber" After 17-Hour Standoff

On March 9, 2025, British police arrested a man who scaled the Elizabeth Tower, home to the iconic Big Ben clock, and waved a Palestinian flag during a dramatic 17-hour standoff. The protester, dubbed "Big Ben Man," was taken into custody after descending from the tower, where he had drawn cheers and chants of "Free Palestine" from onlookers.

Westminster Police confirmed the arrest in a statement, citing the need to ensure the safety of officers, the individual, and the public. Specialized teams, including the London Fire Brigade, were deployed to resolve the situation safely. Videos shared on social media showed the man climbing over a fence surrounding parliamentary buildings without intervention, raising questions about security measures.

During the standoff, the climber refused to let officers approach him, stating he would come down "on his own terms." Supporters gathered at Victoria Bridge, chanting "Free Palestine" and calling him a "hero." When he was finally lowered from the tower, he waved the Palestinian flag and criticized the UK government for not halting arms sales to Israel.

Conservative MP Ben Obese-Jecty questioned how the man bypassed security, demanding an explanation from authorities. A parliamentary spokesperson confirmed the incident was being handled by the Metropolitan Police but declined to comment on specific security measures.

The protest comes amid growing global solidarity with Palestine. In a related incident, pro-Palestinian activists vandalized Donald Trump’s golf resort in Scotland, writing "Gaza is not for sale" in large letters. The act was described as a response to U.S. policies accused of enabling the ethnic cleansing of Gaza.

The climber’s bold protest has reignited debates about freedom of expression, security, and the international community’s response to the Palestinian cause, highlighting the ongoing struggle for justice in Palestine.
