The Gaza Strip has become one of the most hazardous zones in the world for humanitarian workers, with the Israeli occupation forces repeatedly targeting aid personnel and facilities, resulting in devastating losses. The latest in a series of attacks saw a United Nations employee killed and five others injured, sparking widespread condemnation and renewed calls for accountability under international law.
Since the escalation of violence in Gaza on October 7, 2023, humanitarian workers have operated under constant threat, with hundreds killed or injured in relentless Israeli strikes. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 300 aid workers in Palestinian territories have lost their lives by late October 2024. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reported at least 188 of its employees killed by April 2024, a number that has since risen as Israeli attacks continue unabated.
One of the most shocking incidents occurred in April 2024, when an Israeli airstrike targeted a World Central Kitchen aid convoy in Deir al-Balah, killing seven workers despite prior coordination of their route with Israeli authorities. Months later, in August 2024, four employees of the American organization Anera were killed in central Gaza, further highlighting the peril faced by those delivering essential aid.
These attacks have not been limited to field workers. Humanitarian facilities, including UNRWA food distribution centers and shelters, have also been repeatedly struck, even after their coordinates were shared with Israeli forces to ensure their protection. Human Rights Watch has documented at least eight such strikes on aid convoys and buildings, describing them as potential violations of international law, including the use of "starvation as a method of warfare."
The targeting of humanitarian workers has drawn sharp criticism from international bodies. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called Gaza "the most dangerous place for aid workers," emphasizing that these attacks severely hinder efforts to assist over two million Palestinians enduring an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
In Beit Lahia, north of Gaza, employees of the Al-Khair International Foundation were directly targeted by Israeli forces, resulting in multiple casualties. Such incidents underscore the grave risks faced by those striving to alleviate the suffering of Gaza's besieged population.
As the death toll among humanitarian workers continues to climb, there are growing demands for accountability. Palestinian voices and international advocates are urging the global community to ensure the protection of aid workers and to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international humanitarian law. The ongoing targeting of those who seek to save lives in Gaza remains a stark reminder of the brutality of this conflict and the urgent need for justice.
