Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, has endured brutal treatment at the hands of Israeli authorities, facing prolonged interrogations and severe abuse, according to his lawyer, Ghaid Qassem. Arrested without charge, he has been subjected to relentless psychological and physical torture, enduring five rounds of interrogation and weeks of isolation.
Held in solitary confinement at Ofer Prison for 25 days, Dr. Abu Safia was interrogated for up to 13 days at a time. His lawyer revealed that he was physically and mentally exhausted, with his deteriorating condition compounded by the devastating news of his son’s death and the ongoing war in Gaza. Despite his suffering, his primary concern remains the fate of Gaza’s medical staff and the patients left behind in dire conditions.
Initially detained at the infamous Sde Teiman prison—described by Dr. Abu Safia as a "slaughterhouse"—he witnessed prisoners shackled for months, others with untreated amputations, and detainees losing extreme amounts of weight due to starvation. Exposed to the harsh elements in open cages, prisoners are forbidden from speaking, praying, or even sitting in a position of comfort.
Still classified as an "unlawful combatant" without trial, Dr. Abu Safia’s ordeal mirrors the systematic mistreatment of Palestinian detainees. His testimony sheds light on the inhumane conditions inside Israeli prisons, where medical negligence, abuse, and deprivation have become the norm under occupation rule.
