Israeli occupation forces bombed the emergency building of Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis on Sunday evening, killing at least two people and injuring several others in yet another direct attack on Gaza’s collapsing healthcare system. The targeted strike hit the hospital’s surgery building, igniting a massive fire and further endangering the lives of patients already struggling to survive under dire conditions.
Among the victims was Ismail Barhoum, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, who succumbed to his injuries after being treated for wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike last Tuesday in Rafah. His nephew, Mohammed Barhoum, was killed in the earlier attack. The airstrike left parts of the medical complex in flames, with thick smoke rising from the facility as rescue workers scrambled to save the wounded.
The attack on Nasser Medical Complex underscores Israel’s systematic targeting of Gaza’s hospitals, which have already been devastated by months of relentless bombing. With most medical facilities either destroyed or non-functional, patients are left with nowhere to seek treatment. Ambulances attempting to reach the wounded are routinely obstructed, with medical crews reporting being surrounded by Israeli forces and losing contact during urgent missions.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military continued its offensive on southern Gaza, launching fresh strikes on Rafah’s Tel Sultan neighbourhood and forcibly displacing thousands of residents. The occupation declared the area a “dangerous combat zone,” issuing evacuation orders as its forces advanced. The renewed aggression has resulted in 673 Palestinian deaths and 1,233 injuries since March 18, adding to the staggering toll of over 50,000 killed and 113,000 wounded since October 7.
As the genocide in Gaza enters its 534th day, Israel’s deliberate attacks on hospitals, ambulances, and medical workers reflect a broader strategy aimed at dismantling every aspect of life in the besieged Strip. The targeting of the wounded, the sick, and those trying to save lives exposes the cruelty of an occupation that operates with complete impunity—while the world watches in silence.
