Dr. Marwan Al-Hams, the head of field hospitals for Gaza’s Ministry of Health, has raised alarm over the imminent collapse of the territory's healthcare system due to overwhelming casualties and insufficient medical aid. The dire situation is exacerbated by a stark disconnect between the urgent medical needs and the meagre support being provided, despite efforts to coordinate with the World Health Organization.
Hospitals across Gaza are inundated with critical cases, including severe burn victims and patients requiring amputations. Al-Hams described the relentless influx of casualties as beyond the capacity of existing field hospitals, which are struggling without essential supplies and equipment.
He emphasised that while medical teams are exerting every effort to save lives, the lack of basic medication and surgical tools is severely undermining their ability to provide adequate care. The already strained healthcare system is on the brink, and urgent action is needed from the international community and humanitarian organisations to avert a full-blown health disaster.
Civilians attempting to reach the European Hospital, the main medical facility in southern Gaza, face significant challenges, as the area is heavily impacted by ongoing military operations. Al-Hams's plea highlights the critical need for immediate intervention to ensure the survival of countless individuals in desperate need of medical attention.
