Microsoft Faces Backlash Over Employee Protest Against AI Collaboration with Israel

A wave of internal dissent is growing within Microsoft, as employees raise their voices against the company's reported involvement in supplying artificial intelligence technologies to the Israeli military amid its devastating assault on Gaza. The latest protest came during a high-profile company event, where Moroccan employee Ibtihal Abu Al-Saad publicly denounced Microsoft's role, accusing it of complicity in crimes against Palestinians.

Interrupting a speech by Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President for Artificial Intelligence, Abu Al-Saad condemned the company’s collaboration with what she described as a genocidal regime. Declaring "Shame on you!" before tossing a Palestinian keffiyeh onto the stage, she accused Microsoft of having "blood on its hands" for selling AI tools used in warfare against civilians in Gaza. She was quickly removed from the venue, but her message echoed loudly among employees and online.

Her action follows growing frustration inside the tech giant, where workers have called on leadership to cut ties with the Israeli military. Another protester, employee Fania Agrawal, voiced similar concerns during a separate part of the event. These actions come after an investigation by the Associated Press uncovered the use of Microsoft-linked AI in Israeli military operations.

While Microsoft reiterated its commitment to hearing diverse viewpoints, it avoided addressing the core of the allegations. Both Abu Al-Saad and Agrawal reportedly lost access to internal systems shortly after the protest, raising concerns about potential retaliation. For many, the silence of the company on its ethical responsibility speaks louder than the disruption — and the voices of its workers may just be the beginning.
