Former leaders, foreign ministers, and prominent figures in Latin America have called on the international community, through the United Nations, to impose sanctions on "Israel" for its decision to illegally annex large parts of the occupied Palestinian territory. They have also demanded, through a statement signed by them, to reactivate the UN Special Committee against Apartheid and to "lift the immunity that Israel enjoys in its systematic violation of international law with the direct and strategic support of US President Donald Trump."
The signatories of the statement, which is stated by the Solidarity Committee with the Palestinian People in Uruguay, have condemned this "illegal and unprecedented" decision. They have denounced the Israeli occupation’s crimes committed against Palestinians without accountability, considering that the “Deal of the Century” reinforces all these Israeli abuses, which are a flagrant violation of the basic principles of international law, including the right to self-determination and the principle of the inadmissibility of annexation of territory by force.
In addition, the signatories have confirmed that this statement came as a response to the Palestinian people's call, who have lived for decades under Israeli occupation, colonialism, and the apartheid regime. They urge other states to take effective measures to stop the Israeli annexation and violation of Palestinian political and human rights. They also support the Palestinian call to ban arms trade and cooperation with "Israel" in the military and security fields, warning that the trade with Israeli settlements is illegal, and demanding individuals and companies complicit in the apartheid regime to take responsibility and stop the collusion that supports the occupation in its violations of the rights of an entire people.
They have pledged to pressure their governments to implement the measures mentioned in the statement, as they are essential to face the racism and brutality of the occupation.
Furthermore, they have pointed out that the international community, in the past, unanimously rejected the apartheid regime in South Africa and helped to topple it, through effective accountability measures, and they are now calling on the community to take similar action to end decades of Israeli repression against Palestinians.
They have asked their governments to comply with their obligations under international law, and work to adopt a resolution in the United Nations General Assembly renewing the call for legal sanctions against "Israel" focusing on the military blockade, as well as providing the necessary means to implement this, as a countermeasure to stop the annexation policy and others.
This, they have stressed, also includes ensuring the activation of the United Nations database of companies operating in illegal Israeli settlements and updating them regularly.
In turn, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants has welcomed such a statement.
