Meta Accused of Aiding Israel in Silencing Palestinian Voices Online

Serious leaks published by the “Drop Site” have revealed that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been complicit in one of the largest digital censorship campaigns in modern history—targeting Palestinian voices and narratives at the request of the Israeli government.

Since 7 October 2023, the beginning of Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza, Meta has reportedly complied with nearly 94% of Israel's requests to remove Palestinian-related content from its platforms. The documents also show that Israel submitted more content removal requests than any other country, highlighting its deep influence on global digital platforms and the shaping of online discourse.

This censorship has not only targeted users in Palestine but has extended to pro-Palestinian content published internationally, silencing voices of solidarity and calls for justice. Experts describe this campaign as one of the widest collective censorship operations of the digital age, amounting to an attack on freedom of expression and a reinforcement of the Israeli narrative at the expense of Palestinian realities.

Palestinian journalist Khaled Safi condemned Meta's actions as a deliberate digital collusion that "participates in the erasure of Palestinian truth" and deepens the suffering of the people of Gaza. He warned that this silencing does not merely distort facts—it actively suppresses human rights advocacy.

Supporting these claims, Human Rights Watch has documented Meta’s systematic removal of peaceful pro-Palestinian content, especially following the launch of the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation. Their report exposed a pattern of unjustified censorship, including posts related to Palestinian rights and criticism of Israeli violations.

The Palestinian Studies Foundation echoed these findings, asserting that Meta and other internet giants are engaged in a broader war against the Palestinian narrative—denying millions their voice while promoting a one-sided portrayal of events.

Since the war on Gaza began, Meta has taken action against nearly 38.8 million posts, underscoring the scale of suppression. As the digital public square becomes increasingly hostile to Palestinian voices, many are calling for global accountability and urgent reforms to protect freedom of expression in the digital age.
