Gaza’s Displacement Crisis Deepens as UN Warns of Collapse

The catastrophe in Gaza continues to spiral as more than 90,000 displaced Palestinians now shelter in overcrowded UN-run facilities across the enclave. According to UNRWA, the agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, these makeshift sanctuaries—115 in total—are bursting with families fleeing relentless Israeli attacks that have persisted for over 19 months.

Since the collapse of the ceasefire in March, nearly half a million more people have been forced to flee. In total, about 1.9 million—nearly 90% of Gaza’s population—are now displaced, many of them for the second or third time. They survive without food, clean water, or medical care, trapped under blockade and siege.

UNRWA warns the situation is deteriorating rapidly. Airstrikes have intensified, killing over 70 civilians in the past 48 hours alone. Gaza City and the northern parts of the Strip have been hardest hit, but nowhere is safe—bombs are falling on Khan Younis and Rafah in the south, leaving entire families buried beneath rubble.

Aid groups and human rights monitors report that Israel has sealed all border crossings, choking off the last remaining lifeline of humanitarian supplies. Medical teams are overwhelmed. Médecins Sans Frontières has described Gaza as a “mass grave” for civilians and aid workers alike, raising the alarm over the deliberate targeting of those offering relief. “We are witnessing in real time the destruction and forced displacement of an entire population,” warned MSF’s emergency coordinator.

The death toll continues to mount—over 51,000 Palestinians killed, and more than 116,000 injured since October 2023. Yet the world remains paralysed, as Gaza bleeds in silence.
