Algerian Lawmakers Push to Outlaw Normalisation with “Israel” Amid Rising Palestinian Solidarity

As much of the Arab world remains silent and international complicity deepens, Algerian political parties and MPs have reignited their call to criminalise all forms of normalisation with the Israeli regime. During a recent parliamentary session in Algiers, senior political leaders and lawmakers reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, condemning the ongoing massacres and forced displacements in Gaza.

Mustapha Yahi, Secretary General of the National Democratic Rally (RND), denounced what he described as a “brutal killing machine” that destroys homes, burns cities, and uses starvation as a weapon of war. His words echoed a broader sentiment across the room: outrage at the Israeli regime’s impunity and the international failure to hold it accountable.

Abdelaali Hassani Cherif, head of the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), called for a united internal front against Western pressures targeting Algeria’s principled stance. “Only by criminalising colonialism and any normalisation with the Zionist entity can we remain true to our commitment to justice,” he said.

Others, including Abdelkrim Benmbarek of the National Liberation Front (FLN), directly blamed those who have normalised ties with “Israel” for emboldening its brutality. “Without collaborators, the occupiers would not dare commit such crimes in broad daylight—against children, the elderly, and civilians—without fear of accountability,” he said.

As the meeting closed, participants chanted in solidarity with Palestine and denounced any rapprochement with the occupying power. This was not the first such effort. In 2022, Algerian lawmakers drafted a seven-article bill to criminalise all forms of normalisation, placing strict limits on any contact with the occupying entity or travel to and from occupied Palestinian territories.

Algeria remains one of the few countries that uphold a complete diplomatic and commercial boycott of the Israeli regime—an uncompromising stance rooted in public support and moral clarity. In a world where silence often equals complicity, Algeria is choosing resistance.
