The Prosthetic Limbs and Paralysis Centre in Gaza is overwhelmed, struggling to keep pace with the growing number of amputees as Israeli bombardments continue to devastate the besieged Strip. Around 600 amputees have sought treatment at the centre, with women and children making up 60% of the cases—clear evidence of the indiscriminate violence unleashed upon civilians.
While about 100 patients have so far received prosthetics and 320 others are undergoing therapy, the overall number of amputees since the start of the war has now exceeded 4,700. Resources are stretched beyond breaking point, with raw materials and essential equipment running dangerously low. Staff work relentlessly, but the needs are simply overwhelming.
The centre’s media director, Hosni Muhanna, described the situation as an unprecedented humanitarian disaster, warning that amputations will only increase if the violence continues. As Israeli forces resumed their bombardment in March, hopes for a lasting ceasefire collapsed, leaving Gaza once again submerged in grief, destruction, and despair.
In a desperate appeal, Muhanna urged international organisations to act swiftly—not only to support Gaza’s shattered medical infrastructure, but to demand an end to the brutal aggression. Without urgent intervention, the future for Gaza’s wounded will be one of permanent suffering, abandoned by a world that has too often looked away.
