Amnesty Slams Global Inaction as Gaza Starves and Bleeds

Amnesty International’s Secretary-General, Agnès Callamard, has denounced the world’s inaction as Gaza endures what she described as a live-broadcasted genocide. She criticised powerful governments for failing to intervene or use existing legal tools to halt the devastation, calling their silence a dangerous form of complicity. “This is not just a humanitarian failure—it’s a political one,” she warned, urging the activation of international agreements that require the respect of human rights and humanitarian law.

Her remarks come as Gaza faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. With border crossings sealed off for the second month in a row, over 90% of the population is now facing extreme food insecurity. The Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor has reported a surge in starvation-related deaths, particularly among children and the elderly, while basic medical and food supplies remain critically low.

Since October 2023, more than 172,000 Palestinians have been killed or wounded, the vast majority women and children. Thousands remain trapped under rubble or listed as missing, while entire families are wiped out in ongoing strikes. Rights groups say the deliberate obstruction of aid and the scale of destruction amount to crimes that demand international accountability—not more delays.
