French President Emmanuel Macron has issued his strongest warning yet to Israel, threatening a tougher French and European stance if the blockade on Gaza is not urgently lifted. Speaking alongside Singapore’s Prime Minister, Macron called for the immediate delivery of food, water, and medicine to Palestinians, and the evacuation of the wounded, calling the humanitarian situation "untenable."
His remarks, though measured, triggered outrage in Israel, where officials accused Macron of leading a “crusade” for even suggesting the recognition of a Palestinian state. But for Palestinians, his words, however overdue, represent a long-awaited recognition of their suffering and the urgent need for international accountability.
France, alongside the UK and Canada, has pledged readiness to recognise a Palestinian state as part of a path toward the two-state solution. Yet Macron’s conditions for recognition, disarmament, reform of the Palestinian Authority, and a regional security pact, reflect the West’s continued fixation on Israeli security, often at the expense of Palestinian sovereignty.
While Paris insists this is a matter of both morality and necessity, Israel has doubled down on its rejection, even as it resumes its brutal assault on Gaza. More than 54,000 Palestinians have now been killed since the war began, with hundreds of thousands displaced and Gaza’s infrastructure in ruins.
Palestinians have heard many promises over the decades. What they now demand is not another delay, but a clear and irreversible step toward freedom, dignity, and the end of a blockade that has turned Gaza into a graveyard.
