Gaza’s Health System Nears Collapse as Hospitals Crumble Under Siege

$The United Nations and the World Health Organization have issued grave warnings that Gaza’s health system is on the brink of total collapse, as Israel’s ongoing war reduces hospitals to hollow shells amid relentless bombardment and a fuel blockade now stretching past 100 days.

Only 17 of Gaza’s 36 hospitals remain even partially operational. In the north, every facility has gone dark. In the south, hospitals like Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, the Strip’s largest, are on the verge of shutting down, their generators running dry, their wards overwhelmed, their doctors working by torchlight.

The numbers are devastating. Nearly 95% of Gaza’s hospitals have been damaged or destroyed. The remaining ones, crippled by attacks and deprivation, are down to just 2,000 beds for over 2 million people. Life-saving services, intensive care, surgeries, neonatal units, are disappearing. And with each airstrike, a system already bleeding out takes another fatal blow.

The WHO has recorded almost 700 attacks on the health sector since October 2023. These are not collateral damages. They are part of a strategy that dismantles Gaza’s ability to survive, let alone heal.

Calls for a ceasefire, for the entry of fuel and medical aid, for the protection of hospitals, have gone unanswered. In Gaza, the wounded lie on floors, surgeries are performed without anaesthesia, and children die not just from bombs, but from a world that lets this happen. The collapse is no longer imminent, it is already here.
