European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has condemned Israel for breaching human rights obligations under Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, highlighting the urgent need to alleviate Gaza’s worsening humanitarian crisis. Speaking after a meeting of EU foreign ministers, Kallas emphasised the bloc’s commitment to securing tangible improvements in the daily lives of Gaza’s besieged population. She called for an immediate comprehensive ceasefire, unfettered humanitarian access, and the release of hostages, underlining the EU’s prioritisation of these urgent demands.
Kallas warned that failure to improve conditions in Gaza may prompt the EU to adopt further restrictive measures against Israel. The diplomatic move follows mounting evidence and international criticism of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since October 2023, widely regarded as a devastating assault marked by mass killings, starvation, and displacement. Despite rulings from the International Court of Justice and global calls to halt the offensive, Israeli operations persist, deepening the humanitarian catastrophe.
The EU’s review of its partnership with Israel reflects growing unease among member states regarding the legal and moral implications of continued support for Israeli military actions. Kallas stressed the importance of holding Israel accountable and ensuring compliance with international human rights standards. The review also signals a shift towards greater pressure on Israel to meet its responsibilities under international law and address the crisis with urgency.
European capitals have expressed alarm at the scale of civilian suffering in Gaza, with Kallas affirming that the EU’s goal is to drive measurable progress for Palestinians living under siege. The statement echoes concerns raised by humanitarian organisations about the deliberate obstruction of aid and ongoing violence targeting civilians. It also underscores the EU’s determination to act decisively if improvements remain elusive.
As Gaza’s humanitarian disaster unfolds, the EU’s stance represents a significant diplomatic challenge to Israel’s actions and a call for renewed international solidarity with Palestinians. The situation remains critical, with millions in Gaza facing starvation, displacement, and loss of life amid a blockade and military assault that show no signs of abating.
