Human Rights Groups Urge UN to End “Aid Trap” Killings in Gaza

A coalition of international human rights observers, led by the Euro‑Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, has issued a stern warning: the UN and global relief organisations must stop offering honorary condemnations and take decisive action to halt the growing Israeli violence directed at civilians at so‑called aid distribution points in Gaza.

Since 27 May, over 500 Palestinians have been shot or killed while queueing for meagre aid, a lethal environment created under the guise of humanitarian relief by the Israel‑ and US‑backed “Gaza Humanitarian Foundation”. Among them, roughly 55 died in a single day, as the military maintained its chokehold amid devastating hunger.

Euro‑Med Monitor describes the operation as “a new killing mechanism cloaked in a humanitarian facade”, accusing UN agencies of betraying their mandates by remaining silent . It insists the UN’s human rights bodies, especially OHCHR, the Human Rights Council, special rapporteurs, and the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor, must document incidents, name perpetrators, and demand accountability.

The organisation also urges the UN to reinforce support for UNRWA, whose role in sustaining hundreds of thousands of Gazans has been undermined by Israeli tactics that weaponise aid. It called on OCHA and the WFP to rigorously report every incident, and for bodies like WHO and ICRC to intensify field monitoring and publicly pressure Israel to meet its obligations as the occupying power.

New data from Rafah confirms the scale of the crisis: since the aid system began under military oversight on 27 May, at least 549 Palestinians have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded attempting to access food at distribution sites.

This mounting evidence has prompted the call for economic, diplomatic, and military sanctions against Israel, along with a full arms embargo, as part of a stronger international response to avert further atrocity .

From a Palestinian viewpoint, what began as a lifeline has become a deadly gauntlet. The UN is now being pressed to fulfil its responsibilities, not just by voicing regret, but by acting decisively to protect the lives it vowed  save.
