The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate has urgently appealed for international intervention to save the life of journalist Ali Al-Samoudi, who is currently detained under harsh conditions by Israeli authorities. Al-Samoudi, 58, a correspondent for Al-Quds and freelance producer for Al Jazeera, has reportedly suffered severe weight loss and health deterioration due to prolonged administrative detention, combined with what his lawyer describes as physical and psychological abuse.
Al-Samoudi’s career has been repeatedly targeted, with 11 documented injuries, including serious gunshot wounds and tear gas exposure, leaving lasting health effects. Notably, he was shot in the back while covering an Israeli raid on Jenin refugee camp on the same day journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was killed. Other violations over the years include arbitrary dismissal from Reuters, confiscation of personal devices, and repeated arrests, highlighting a long-standing pattern of intimidation against Palestinian journalists.
Most recently, Al-Samoudi was arrested on April 29, 2025, and placed under a six-month administrative detention order without charge. Denied essential medications for chronic illnesses, he has endured further physical and psychological mistreatment during transfers between detention centres. The Syndicate warns that his condition is deteriorating rapidly and holds Israeli authorities fully responsible for his life, stressing that his detention reflects a broader strategy of silencing press freedom.
Al-Samoudi is also a key witness in the case of Shireen Abu Akleh’s assassination, presented to the International Criminal Court, and has provided testimony to the UN Human Rights Council. Since October 2023, around 150 Palestinian journalists have been arrested, with roughly 50 still in detention. The Syndicate is calling for his immediate and unconditional release, urgent international protection for journalists, and accountability for Israel’s actions before international courts.
