One in Three Palestinians in Israeli Prisons Held Without Charge

Palestinian prisoners continue to face systematic repression as Israeli authorities intensify the use of administrative detention, a policy allowing incarceration without charge or trial. According to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club, around 32% of Palestinians currently held in Israeli jails are detained under this mechanism, surpassing those serving formal sentences or classified as “illegal combatants.”

In recent weeks, the occupation has re-arrested dozens of Palestinians previously released from administrative detention, including journalists and community leaders. The club described the military courts enforcing these detentions as conducting “sham trials,” relying solely on intelligence orders and ignoring fundamental legal standards.

Journalists remain a prime target. Reporters Moaz and Asid Amarneh were recently re-arrested from Bethlehem under administrative detention for four and six months, while Ali Al-Samoudi of Jenin had his detention renewed for another four months. In total, 54 Palestinian journalists are currently held in Israeli prisons, with 21 under administrative detention, leaving them trapped without charge or set release dates. This practice continues to suppress independent reporting and silence Palestinian voices amid ongoing conflict.
