Gaza's Doctors Defy Israeli Onslaught: "We Will Not Abandon Our People"

The director of Gaza's largest hospital has vowed to continue medical operations after losing family members in an Israeli airstrike that destroyed his home. Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, who leads Al-Shifa Medical Complex, confirmed his brother and several relatives were killed when missiles struck their residence in western Gaza City on Saturday. Despite the personal tragedy, he emphasized that healthcare workers would maintain their duties under what he described as "conditions exceeding human capacity."

Medical staff across Gaza's collapsing health system face catastrophic shortages of medicines, equipment, and power while treating thousands of wounded under constant bombardment. Dr. Abu Salmiya characterized healthcare workers as the "final defense line" against what he termed systematic attacks on civilian infrastructure. "They target our homes and hospitals to break our will, but we remain steadfast in our sacred duty," he stated, adding that the strike on his personal residence would not deter him from his post.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate as Israeli attacks enter their seventh month, with health facilities operating at less than 10% capacity according to recent assessments. Over 64,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began, with medical workers accounting for a significant proportion of casualties due to targeted strikes on healthcare infrastructure.
