Freedom Flotilla Activists Describe Brutal Detention as Blockade of Gaza Persists

Activists from the “Global Freedom Flotilla” have arrived in Turkey after being intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, which continues to endure a two‑year genocidal siege. The flotilla, a convoy of more than 40 vessels carrying humanitarian aid and international volunteers, was intercepted despite operating in open waters, and its members recount severe mistreatment during detention.

Over 400 activists were taken by force, many subjected to physical abuse, humiliation, and deprivation of basic necessities. Italian activist Paolo Romano said passengers were ordered to kneel face down and endured beatings and mockery. Malaysian activist Ilya Balqis described being handcuffed, denied movement, and deprived of water and medicine, calling the ordeal “the worst experience” of her life. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was reportedly held in a cell with minimal provisions.

Turkey condemned the interception as “an act of terrorism.” President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan denounced it as an act of brutality, while the Turkish Foreign Minister hailed the activists as “voices of humanity.” Among those deported were 137 activists from 13 countries, including 36 Turkish citizens, who were flown to Istanbul and welcomed by supporters.

Eyewitness reports and journalists confirmed the flotilla was stopped some 88 kilometres from Gaza’s coast, with detainees enduring harsh conditions for two days before being released under international pressure. For many, the flotilla represents a profound act of solidarity against the genocidal siege of Gaza, and plans are already underway to mount another attempt to breach the blockade and deliver urgent aid to the besieged enclave.
