Kamel Mohammad Mahmoud Al-Ajrami, a 69-year-old Palestinian from Gaza, has died in Israeli custody, marking the second prisoner fatality within 24 hours. Al-Ajrami, a father of six, had been detained since October 25, 2024, and was transferred to Soroka Medical Center from Naqab Desert Prison before his death on October 10, 2025. Human rights groups warn that his death is part of a broader pattern of systematic killings and mistreatment of Palestinian prisoners.
Advocates for Palestinian detainees describe the conditions in Israeli prisons as deliberately life-threatening, citing torture, starvation, medical neglect, and abuse. Al-Ajrami’s death comes during heightened calls by Israeli officials to impose harsher measures against prisoners, including legislation that could allow executions. Since the start of the current war, 80 prisoners have been confirmed killed, with hundreds more facing inhumane conditions and uncertain fates. The prisoner fatalities are considered by rights groups as a continuation of the ongoing genocidal war, extending its impact into detention facilities.
Human rights organizations emphasize the urgent need for international intervention to hold Israeli authorities accountable. They stress that thousands of prisoners remain at risk under deteriorating conditions, while field executions and delayed returns of bodies serve as stark evidence of extreme violence. Al-Ajrami’s death underscores the severity of the humanitarian and legal crisis faced by Palestinian detainees, and advocates call for immediate sanctions and global action to prevent further loss of life.
