Journalists Detained at Checkpoint in Southern West Bank

On Tuesday morning, several journalists were detained at the Al-Jaba’ah checkpoint, northwest of Hebron, preventing them from reporting on local developments. The checkpoint, a key entrance to the town of Surif, is routinely used to control movement, and the detentions highlight ongoing restrictions faced by media professionals in the occupied West Bank.

The journalists affected include Musab Shawar, Samer Ruwaished, and Hisham Abu Shaqra. Observers noted that such measures hinder the ability of reporters to document events on the ground, limiting transparency and public access to information. These actions come amid broader restrictions on movement and reporting in the area, particularly in regions under heightened military oversight.

Local sources emphasised that the continued use of checkpoints to detain journalists constitutes a direct challenge to press freedom. They warned that such restrictions not only impede independent reporting but also exacerbate the difficulty of conveying the realities faced by local communities living under prolonged occupation.
