UNICEF: Children Continue to Die Daily in Gaza Despite Ceasefire

Since the ceasefire took effect in Gaza on 11 October, an average of two children have been killed each day, UNICEF reports. Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva, UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires said that at least 67 children have died and dozens more injured in the intervening weeks, with recent attacks killing seven children in Gaza City one day and a girl in Khan Younis the next. He described the continuing violence as leaving no safe space for children, despite the ceasefire intended to protect civilians.

Pires outlined the severe humanitarian conditions on the ground. Hundreds of thousands of children are living in makeshift shelters and tents, many without heating, insulation, or blankets, exposing them to the harsh winter. Children are enduring freezing temperatures, contaminated water, and limited access to medical care, while some walk barefoot among rubble, survivors of injuries and amputations. “These numbers are not just statistics; each represents a child with a family and dreams,” he stressed.

The UNICEF spokesperson warned that current aid efforts remain insufficient and called for urgent action to increase humanitarian support. Rapid delivery of assistance, he said, could prevent further loss of life and alleviate suffering. “Far too many children have already paid the heaviest price, and many continue to do so,” Pires added, urging the international community to ensure that the promises of protection and safety are upheld.
