A Population Vanishing Under a Genocidal War

New demographic analysis indicates that Gaza has lost more than a quarter of a million people since late 2023, a collapse equivalent to over a tenth of its population before the genocidal war began. The figures reflect not only mass killing but also displacement, injury and the long-term consequences of living conditions made uninhabitable. What emerges is the picture of a society being steadily erased, with civilians bearing the heaviest burden of a campaign that has spared neither neighbourhoods nor families.

By the end of 2025, the toll on women and children alone was staggering. Tens of thousands of young lives were cut short, while many more were left wounded, disabled or orphaned. Even after a ceasefire was announced in autumn 2025, deaths continued to be recorded, exposing how fragile and partial the truce proved to be. For those on the ground, the genocidal war did not simply pause; it lingered in the form of ongoing danger, deprivation and fear.

The report also paints a bleak picture of the state of international law. Legal frameworks meant to protect civilians appear to have failed, with widespread violations met by near-total impunity. Casualty figures that were long dismissed have now been effectively confirmed, reinforcing what medical workers and families have said all along: the scale of killing and injury is far greater than many were willing to acknowledge. In Gaza, the demographic decline is not an abstract statistic but a daily reality, measured in empty homes, broken families and a future violently narrowed.
