Education Put on Hold as West Bank Life Tightens Under Regional Escalation

Classrooms across the occupied West Bank have fallen silent once again, as schools and universities shifted fully to remote learning amid mounting regional tensions. Authorities extended the suspension of in-person education for the remainder of the week, covering public and private institutions, kindergartens, and facilities operated by UNRWA. Distance learning is being used as a temporary alternative, an attempt to preserve the academic calendar while reducing risks to students and staff as conditions on the ground continue to deteriorate.

The move follows a sweeping closure imposed by the occupation on cities and towns throughout the West Bank, sharply restricting movement and disrupting everyday routines. Checkpoints, roadblocks and security measures have made travel to campuses increasingly difficult, if not impossible, turning education into yet another casualty of tightening controls. For many families, online lessons are less a solution than a fragile compromise, shaped by unreliable electricity, limited internet access and the constant strain of uncertainty.

These disruptions unfold against the backdrop of a rapidly widening regional crisis. Escalation involving the United States, Iran and the occupation has heightened anxiety, particularly after reports from Tehran confirmed the deaths of senior figures, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Missile and drone exchanges have fuelled fears that instability will spill further into Palestinian daily life, reinforcing a sense that education, like movement and work, remains hostage to forces far beyond the classroom.
