Occupation Closes Al-Aqsa for Sixth Day as Restrictions on Palestinians Intensify

The occupation continues to keep the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem closed for a sixth consecutive day, barring worshippers from entering under the pretext of a declared state of emergency. Security forces have been heavily deployed at the gates of the Old City, forcing Muslims to leave and preventing evening and Taraweeh prayers, in a new escalation targeting religious practice in the holy city.

Rights groups report that stringent security measures include identity checks for passersby and denial of access to prayer areas, leaving the Old City streets nearly empty and forcing most shops to close, according to the Wadi Hilweh Information Centre. Israeli police also arrested Jerusalem resident Khadija Khweis, banning her from Al-Aqsa for a week, with the possibility of extension, continuing a pattern of restrictions and punitive measures against Palestinians.

Politically, the occupation government has extended the travel ban on teacher and activist Hanadi Halwani until August, reflecting a systematic effort to suppress Palestinian activists and impose a new spatial and temporal reality in the city. Human rights organisations warn that these measures violate freedom of worship and threaten Palestinian presence in the heart of occupied Jerusalem.
