Medical evacuations from Gaza halted after fatal incident at border crossing

Medical transfers from Gaza to Egypt have been suspended following the death of a healthcare service provider during an incident involving Israeli forces. The fatality, confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO), occurred amid heightened tensions at the Rafah crossing, highlighting the extreme risks faced by humanitarian personnel in the territory.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the organisation as “deeply saddened” by the loss, noting that two other staff members present during the incident were unharmed. Details remain unclear, as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The suspension applies to all medical evacuations until further notice, halting the movement of critically injured patients seeking urgent care outside Gaza.

Israeli officials stated that their troops encountered a vehicle they considered an “immediate threat,” opening fire in response. The vehicle reportedly accelerated toward soldiers before additional shots were fired. While the incident is under investigation, the closure of the medical evacuation route underscores the fragility of humanitarian operations in a region enduring ongoing genocidal war and a precarious ceasefire.
